With the escape of an old foe, Mia is too late to reveal to her daughter the thrush before Judith can exact her revenge in a wash of blood and death.

"Fissure Free" Book 2 of the Schasm Series by Shari J. Ryan REVIEW

Author Shari J Ryan reunites the colorful cast of friends and family in Book 2 of the Schasm Series with a powerful tribute to the power of the mind and heart in this romantic, suspenseful, and engaging novel.

After nineteen years of suffering with a psychological condition, ethereal Chloe had finally come close to finding her ultimate escape—or, so she thinks on the vibrant streets of Paris.
Finally in a relationship with Alex, a man she fell in love with in Schasm, Chloe thinks life is finally coming together. As she battles her own demons, she attempts to repair the damaged man she’s grown to love. But as his clouded past abruptly crashes into their lives and falls heavily upon their budding romance, Chloe must fight to maintain her relationship.

Although even when the problems begin to subside, she comes to realize certain things cannot be escaped. Franco, her disillusioned, serial-killing uncle has taken up residency in Chloe and Alex’s life. In search for an item that belongs to Chloe, Franco will deceive, connive and conquer until he finds what he is after—that is, unless, Chloe finds a way to beat him at his own game.

Just as Chloe believes she might have sealed the doors of darkness once and for all, new questions, new findings and new inceptions arise. Whether or not Chloe wants to continue forward with the path her life seems to be leading, she quickly learns that any choice she makes will ultimately land her in a place she never knew she was destined to be.

My heart quakes against my sternum. My stomach feels like stone, and my throat is clenching in on itself. I walk to the other bar covered window, completely horrified. I curl my fingers around the damp, ice-cold bars, and I pull myself up, pressing my face against the metal to look out.
The hallway is just as dark and abandoned as this room. The walls are painted a sea green. They’re cracked and peeling, and old rusty handcuffs hang from chains that line the wall. I peer down the other end of the hall, somewhat curious and somewhat petrified as to what I might see. The words “help me” are smeared along the wall in what looks to be blood.
Against my desire, I take in every detail of this deserted passageway, hoping to gain insight on where we might be. But I’m lost and dumfounded. An abandoned institution is the best I can come up with.
Sounds of footsteps arise from the depths of the barren walls, and the dissonance increases with each footstep, warning me that someone is coming. The hallway only has two directions and I don’t see anyone in either.
I’m going crazy.
I could only hope.
The footsteps stop, as does the beating of my heart. I close my eyes and pull in a deep lungful. But I inhale someone else’s warm, stale breath. My eyes snap open, and two large bulging brown eyes stare back at me. My chest caves in. My lungs struggle to move, and I fall backwards.

Shari J. Ryan hails from Central Massachusetts where she lives with her hubby and two lively little boys. Writing has become Shari’s great escape from the real world over the past few years. After a bout of postpartum depression with her first child, Shari was determined to occupy her brain enough to eliminate some of the blue moments in life. When she found writing to help as a newfound therapy, she started her first book. Her books brought her out of postpartum depression and helped her overcome it when her second son was born. Shari likes to think writing saves her mind. She even used one of the characters in the book (the main character’s protagonist mother), to veer away from the type of person she refuses to become. Shari has two happy little boys and the Schasm series to show for her unorthodox therapeutic method.

Which is more real, reality or dreams?
"Fissure Free" is the second book in the Schasm series by Shar J. Ryan and is not a stand alone book.  Be sure you read "Schasm" the first book in the series.
In "Fissure Free" we rejoin Chloe and Alex as they are trying to live out their lives in Paris, having drifted there in an attempt to be together, but nothing is ever what it seems.  While life in Paris allows them freedom, the truth is that they are not in control of their reality.  As life begins to unravel it is up to Chloe to figure out how to keep their unconscious bodies safe while still living the dream of being together.
Shari J. Ryan creates a world full of love and conflict where two people who want nothing more than to be together have to face the fact that nothing about their lives is normal.  Every time Chloe and Alex get an answer more questions are revealed.  I love they that Ryan's writing flows and how she develops all of her characters major and minor.  I can't wit for the next installment in Alex and Chloe's story.
Be sure to add "Schasm" and "Fissure Free" to your summer reading list today!
Happy Reading!

Chloe Valcourt drifts between two worlds: the dark reality of her domineering mother and feeble father and the vivid fantasy of her imagination. With her condition comes the harsh observation of doctors who intend to cure her of it. But a chance encounter with a handsome and vaguely familiar young man in her dream world hints at the possibility of hidden truths—and a life she can’t remember. As her drifts become a greater escape from the cruelty of the real world, Chloe finds herself lost between what is real and what is imagined, questioning her very existence. Can she remain in the lush new imagined landscape to find happiness in a realm of her own invention? Is she doomed to return to the harsh reality of the outside world forever? Or will she become trapped somewhere between the two…unable to return to either?

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I live with my husband and 14-month-old daughter in Palm Harbor, Florida.  I’m a transplant from Michigan, but relish in the sunny weather.  Before my daughter arrived my two dogs, a 5lb. Chihuahua and a 75lb. lab mix, had all of my attention.  After over a decade of teaching art in the public school system I have decided to stay home to raise my daughter, but I also work for my husband’s business as the Social Media Specialist and I co-run a blog with my friend, www.sciencefictionandsuch.com.

What do you do when you are not writing?
Deciding to stay home with my daughter was a big decision for me.  I had never expected to be a stay-at-home mother, but it has been a really rewarding experience.  I dedicate most of my time to her.  When we aren’t interacting directly I am usually working on the computer.  As an artist I often do crafting projects, usually for gifts, to entertain myself.  I don’t know about anyone else, but after having a child I find I don’t have much time to myself, so writing has become the thing I do when she is sleeping.

When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?
I have enjoyed writing ever since I was in grade school (I even won a Young Author Award).  I was told I had a talent for it by teachers, but never really gave it any consideration as a career—until now.  And, of course, going through college to get my Bachelors and Masters degrees involved a great deal of writing.   Art theory is one of my favorite parts of what I do and expressing your ideas in writing is essential.  I pursued writing with the intention to publish starting almost 6 years ago and published Moonflower at the end of March in 2013.

I started with the intention to
Well, I started with the intention to write for myself but soon felt like I had something, something that was unique and written well enough to share with others.  I didn’t intend to publish Moonflower at first but I am so glad I did.  It is an accomplishment that no one can ever take from me.

Do you ever experience writer's block?
Yes, during the writing of book two of the Moonflower series I had a serious halt to all work.  After quite some time, I began working on my new series and then came back to it.  Once I began writing again I had to push through the section I was having problems with, but like magic, inspiration hit.  I don’t even know what prompted it but new ideas for the book erupted and I’m pleased to think that the second book will be more exciting than the first.

How did you come up with the title?
It may seem cliche, but it came to me in a daydream.  Right before I was about to fall asleep I imagined this scenario and it began to play like a movie in my mind.  Then I incorporated my favorite necklace into the idea.  It is made of moonstone.  This then made me wonder if there was an actual moonflower. And, well, the rest is history.

Do you base your characters on people you know?
I loosely base some of the characters on people I know.  It gives me somewhere to start from and then I develop the character’s individual personality based on his/her desires and situation.

If yes, do you tell them?
Both Lucius and Donovan are actually fashioned from different aspects of my husband.  It was funny how he actually caught onto it as he was reading along with my drafts.  He can be very sweet and generous like Lucius while at another moment he is serious and driven like Donovan, but almost always he is passionate about what he is doing.  You may see that passion in both of the brothers, just about different things that are important to that character.

What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

I don’t expect everyone to like my book.  I have found that I often don’t like books that many other people have acclaimed, but the toughest criticism I have ever had was a person who reviewed my book by saying she hadn’t finished it.  This leaves so many unanswered questions like why didn’t she like it and how far did she get?  It is my belief that it is difficult to judge a book without reading its entirety.  I have read books that I didn’t finish myself and still gave them a fairly good review because it was well written, just not my cup-of-tea.
The best compliment I have ever gotten was when a mother read my book before allowing her child to read it.  She said she enjoyed the book herself but most of all that she thanked me for writing a book that had all the passion without the smut, so she felt comfortable to allow her daughter to read it.  Although I set out to make this a YA read I have found that my biggest readership is 25-45 year olds and that is also a great compliment to me.

Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?

First of all I would like to genuinely thank all of you for having interest in my work.  You are a large part of the reason I write and it is fulfilling to share my work with others.  Also I would like to thank everyone for their support thus far.  Each email, each word of encouragement, helps to fuel my drive to continue writing.
Second, www.edcjohnson.com is where you can follow my updates.  I also have sites on other social media.  I’m EDC Johnson on facebook and @EDCJohnson on twitter and instagram.  I would love for my readers to follow me, and to feel free to ask me questions.

TOUR-EXCERPT

The moon shone bright over a crystal clear lake. Thousands of stars were reflected, like floating diamonds sparkling. The breeze blew gently through red cedar, pine, and maple. The clean mountain air reminded him of camping with his family when he was a boy. It had been so long since he had the liberty, and desire, to enjoy nature. The water called to Devlin. Carefully, without a sound, he pulled the clothes from his body and placed them on the stump beside him. With a slow breath, he walked into the gentle ripples, creating larger crests of his own. Warm water greeted him. He dove under, swimming deeper. A splash caught Devlin’s attention. He broke the surface to find nothing, and no one. Closing his eyes, he reached out with his senses. A lone werewolf was close. Panic flared through him, and he started for the shore, but a woman surfaced before him. A slow smile spread on her face when he flailed back, splashing her in his surprise. “Your heart’s pounding.” Amusement sparkled in her pale blue topaz eyes as she placed one small hand over his chest. Warmth washed through him offering a calm he couldn’t remember ever feeling. Yet, he was terrified the Dales were tracking him. A dream, nothing more than a dream. They can’t find me, he reminded himself. “You startled me,” Devlin replied. “Hmm.” Her foot brushed against his calf, sending a shiver through his entire body. She tapped her finger to her chin. “You remind me of someone, but I can’t figure out who.” Intrigued, and certainly heading toward aroused, he asked, “What makes you say that?” One corner of her shiny pink mouth lifted impishly. “Don’t know, but you do.” Her voice had taken on a husky purr which effectively made his blood pump faster. A dream, just a dream, he told himself. Then he did something bold, something he hadn’t done in so long he was sure he’d fail, even in a fantasy. “What’s a sweet little wolf like you doing out here all alone?” Her giggle was melodic as her already dazzling eyes lit up. “Looking for love in all the wrong places.” As if on cue, his resistance broke. Her tiny waist fit perfectly in his hands, her hips flared in a way that made him groan. Devlin propelled them closer to the shore, until his feet touched bottom. Before he could make his move, her legs locked around his hips and her fingers caressed up his shoulder and neck to delve into his hair. She grazed her lips over his. Afraid to take things too far, he slid his hands up her back, pressing her full breasts against his chest. Needing more of her taste, he deepened their kiss. Devlin felt more alive than he could remember. A dream, just a blasted dream, his brain chimed in. The knowledge didn’t stop him from sweeping his tongue into her mouth when she opened to him. Her body undulated in tune with his, and her heated core slid against his hardened length. The urge to bury himself in her was too much. Pulling back, he panted, “Your name? Need your name, Precious.” “Precious?” She licked her lips as she stared back at him with something like awe in her big blue eyes. He tipped his forehead to hers and breathed in her wild but seductive scent. “You’ve set me free of my old life. You’ve given me something to look forward to.” He didn’t know where the words came from, but he didn’t dare take them back. They felt right. “Jamie Abrams. You better come to me.” There was a command hidden in her sweet sassy voice, one he truly wanted to obey. “I’ll be waiting.” He nodded, rolling her name through his head like a fine wine over his tongue.

About Amie Nichols
AmieNichols
I live in Iowa with my amazing, supportive husband. He is my rock and my king, and treats me like all women should be treated. (Like a spoiled Queen.) I have two miniature dachshund's that are my babies, and they love to keep me company when I am writing away on my next WIP. I'm about to publish my 6th book, and can hardly believe how my life has changed. I'm called an author, and still can't believe it. I've have met some amazing women in my journey so far, and have learned so much. (Sometimes the hard way.) I've been like a sponge soaking up all the information I can on how the publishing world works. It's been a roller coaster ride so far with its ups and its downs. No matter what, I will never regret anything I've done. You can't succeed if you don't try, and if you don't try you won't succeed. One of my favorite quotes is, "If the dream is big enough the facts don't matter". Some other info about me: I love my family, friends, wine, and anything caffeinated. I also love writing HEA. For the same reason I won't watch a movie that I know will make me cry, (with the exception of Steel Magnolias) I will never write a book without an HEA. There might be a few twists and turns, a cliffhanger or two, but ultimately my stories will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. For me, reading is entertainment, a way to escape this crazy insane world. If a book leaves me feeling sad, mad or gut wrenched, it is not for me. There is enough gut-wrenching sadness in this world, I don't need to read about it too. I started writing 3 years ago, and have no plans on stopping. So keep your eye on me, because with the help of some amazing people, and my wonderful fans, this girl is going to be on the New York Times best selling list someday.

Who is Lilly Sumnor?
Just when everything seems to be going right, Lilly's world is turned upside down by her stalker.  Not only is she kidnapped, but he also reveals information about her past that leads her on a journey of discovery.  Every answer seems to lead to more questions.  With the handsome and understanding Luke on her side, Lilly will stop at nothing to discover her past so she can move on with her future.
This book was full of surprises.  I think I wanted to know Lilly's past more than the character did.  The relationship between Luke and Lilly was both sweet and smoking hot.  This book appeals to both the romance and mystery lover in me.  I was hooked from the beginning!  "The Mystery of Lilly" is not a stand alone book so be sure to pick up "Unbreakable" and "Unbreakable 2; The Mystery of Lilly" and plan to spend the weekend in your favorite reading spot because you won't want to stop reading.
Happy Reading
